Yesterday's Workforce Diversification seminar that was held at the Hub at Hilton Cairns was very engaging and informative. The information session that was orgnaised by the Cairns Chamber of Commerce helped Cairns's local business community to better understand the great benefits and rewards of hiring Refugees and Migrants.
Business leaders heard firsthand from Mark Fletcher Solid Plastering & Texture Coatings Pty Ltd Junior Foreman Dhan Gurung's experience living in a refugee camp in Nepal for more than half of his life. They heard about how he was granted settlement in Australia, the language barriers he faced, the support he received, and his career progression with Mark Fletcher.
Dhan's work ethic, determination, and outstanding communication skills landed him a promotion with the Mark Fletcher team. He is now our Junior Foreman. Next time you drive past these projects in Cairns they were Dhan's projects in his new position.

Prior to Dhan's promotion, he was the leading hand working with our Head Foreman Paul Humphries on the Master Builders award-winning residential property in Edge Hill. The work of our team crowned our company as FNQ 2023 Master Builders Residential Trade of the Year.
During the seminar, Andrea Obeyesekere the Manager of Multicultural Services Centacare FNQ gave local business leaders great insight into the services and support that Centacare provides. She told fascinating, heartwarming stories of a refugee, a migrant, and an asylum seeker that Centacare helped get into the workforce. All of them have been successful in their employment, provided a great quality of life for their families, and are homeowners.
Hearing these success stories from the hardships they faced was very inspiring.
